About
I'm currently studying engineering at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and take photos during my spare time, increasingly for the student news outlets, the thriving theatre and sports scenes providing ample material. Working for a newspaper gives you a great opportunity to see things that you just wouldn't otherwise, from the countless shows that are on every week, to Colonel Gadaffi giving a live televised address, the great and good of the City, and prestigious sporting events such as the Varsity match at Twickenham. Perversley, I actually find it quite difficult taking pictures of the City itself – not only has the classic architecture of Cambridge been photographed to death, living and working there on a daily basis means that it all becomes very familiar, and thus hard to find a new angle on a very old subject.
I've found that my style has come to be defined not so much what I shoot, but how; I like taking an observational style that lets people go about their business without noticing that the camera is there, being invisible as the photographer and catching people and scenes in their natural state. To that end, I hate posed photographs. I also love the cinematic aspect ratio, and a lot of my pictures tend towards a ‘letterbox’ crop.
I got into photography when I bought my first camera, a Panasonic creative compact. From there I upgraded to an SLR, frustrated by the performance of the point and shoot, and my photography proper took off. Whilst it is said that you can do photography with any camera, and certain amount of gear does help! I joined the Cambridge University Science Society as their offical photographer in the winter of 2006/2007 and stayed with them for around a year or so, gradually moving over to the newspaper where I now spend just about all of my (photographic) time.
I've also done some comercial brochure work, a wedding in London and some landscape and travel when I can fit it in. Highlights of all of these can be seen in the gallery.
This is a quote that I came across some time ago now, but still think it's very true:
"I think a lot of photographers have a split personality – on the one hand we are extremely proud of the images we create and can be overly confident of their value. At the same time, many of us have that nagging doubt about our abilities and are convinced we are going to wake up one of these days to the realization we are ‘crap’ photographers who should find another hobby – say beer bottle cap collecting. Unfortunately what this dichotomy translates into is that we seem to bounce from one view to the other. We make a good image and we think we are the next Ansel Adams, but receive one valid negative comment and we are devastated and ready to give up the hobby. A few good shoots and we are on top of the world, one bad one and out come the bottle caps. Maybe I’m the only neurotic one on the block, but I suspect not."

This website was designed entirely by me, other than the Flash gallery which is a free download by Airtight Interactive. Interestingly, I find that having colour management switched on in Firefox actually causes the colours to be displayed incorrectly. I've switched it off on my browser for the time being whilst I work out what's going on.
